MACDOWELL FELLOWSHIP

About 300 artists in seven disciplines are awarded Fellowships each year and the sole criterion for acceptance is artistic excellence. There are no residency fees, and need-based stipends and travel reimbursement grants are available to open the residency to the broadest possible community of artists.
MacDowell encourages applications from artists of all backgrounds and all countries in the following disciplines: architecture, film/video, interdisciplinary arts, literature, music composition, theatre, and visual arts. Any applicant whose proposed project does not fall clearly within one of these artistic disciplines should contact the admissions department for guidance. We aim to be inclusive, not exclusive in our admissions process.
MUSEUM OF ARTS AND DESIGN - ARTIST STUDIOS RESIDENT
NEW YORK, NY

Located on the sixth floor of the Museum and open to the public, the Artist Studios at MAD is a community engagement and professional development program for contemporary artists and designers. The first museum residency of its kind, the program encourages visitor engagement with Artist Studios Residents as they expand their creative practice while working on site at MAD. Two artists are selected for six-month sessions (August—February or February—August), for which they receive access to studio space in the Museum and a stipend. Open studio hours are held Wednesday 11 am to 7 pm, and Thursday through Saturday from 10:30 am to 5:30 pm. During that time, the artists welcome Museum visitors inside their workspaces for conversation and close looking.
The MAD Artist Studios residency supports NYC-based artists working in craft and design. Residents receive a stipend based on their on-site public schedule: $15,000 for three days per week and $10,000 for two days, along with access to a dedicated studio space in the Museum, professional development and studio visits with museum staff; additional paid public programming opportunities; interaction with Museum visitors weekly, continued engagement through the community of over 200 Artist Studios alumni; and access to MAD’s galleries, public programs, and exhibition openings.
Artists also receive a stipend for materials and mentorship, admission to paid public programs, and will join a community of more than 200 alumni.
ART OMI - ARTISTS RESIDENCY
GHENT, NY

Art Omi: Artists invites artists, critics, and curators from around the world - representing a wide diversity of artistic styles and practices - to gather in rural New York to experiment, collaborate, and share ideas. Concentrated time for creative work is balanced with the stimulation of cultural exchange and critical appraisal. Art Omi: Artists Residency nurtures deep creative and professional connections in a vibrant social setting.
Each session, two dozen international artists are invited to the program, along with two critics/curators who participate as Critic Emeritus and Critic/Curator-in-Residence. These two individuals play a pivotal role throughout the duration of the residency session as they facilitate discussions, help connect the artists with art world professionals through the Visitors Program, and conduct individual studio visits with the Artists-in-Residence. The Visitors Program enables residents to have conversations with visiting art critics, curators, gallerists and prominent artists. Direct engagement with the New York City art world is unmatched by similar residency programs. The residency culminates in the Open Studios event, offering the public a glimpse of what artists have created during their time at Art Omi.
Art Omi: Artists welcomes artists from all over the world who have been professionally active for at least the past five years. Disciplines include visual arts, sound art, performance, and social practice. Having studied art is not a requirement: we accept applications from self-taught professional artists.
EDWARD F. ALBEE FOUNDATION - WILLIAM FLANAGAN MEMORIAL CREATIVE PERSONS CENTER

Founded in 1962 by Edward Albee - after proceeds from his play Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? proved abundant—the Edward F. Albee Foundation has maintained the William Flanagan Memorial Creative Persons Center (aka "The Barn") in Montauk, Long Island, for nearly 60 years. The Center exists to serve writers and visual artists from all walks of life by providing uninterrupted time and space to work.
Using only talent and need as criteria, the Foundation invites writers and visual artists from all backgrounds to apply. Residents receive individual en-suite bedrooms and separate working studios.

The Center operates nearly year-round and accommodates four creative people at a time. Residencies are offered for full calendar months, and applications are accepted twice annually. The August/September application period is for residencies in January-June; the January/February application period is for residencies in July-November. The Barn is closed every December.
VIRGINIA CENTER FOR CREATIVE ARTS - MT. SAN ANGELO

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, VCCA is proud to offer a rotating selection of fully-funded fellowships at each of our three annual application deadlines (January 15, May 15, and September 15).
At each deadline, applicants will be considered for a VCCA residency and as many fully-funded fellowships for which they are eligible; only one application with a single application fee is required per deadline.
Financial Assistance: In addition to the fully-funded fellowships listed on this page, significant financial assistance is available throughout the year. All eligible applicants demonstrating financial need are considered for financial aid funding to help cover the cost of their residency.
MONSON ARTS RESIDENCY
MONSON, ME

Monson Arts’ residency program supports emerging and established artists and writers by providing them time and space to devote to their creative practices. During each of our 2-week and 4-week programs throughout the year, a cohort of 5 artists and 5 writers are invited to immerse themselves in small town life at the edge of Maine’s North Woods and focus intensely on their work within a creative and inspiring environment. They receive a private studio, private bedroom in shared housing, all meals, and $500 stipend ($250 for 2-week programs).
Applications for a residency at Monson Arts are open to anyone at any stage of their career, working in visual arts, writing, and related fields (i.e. audio, video, photography, woodworking, movement, screen and playwrights). Open calls for residency applications currently take place 3 times throughout the year with deadlines on January 15, May 15, and September 15. Each application period corresponds to specific residency offerings 3-6 months out.
Residents’ studios are located in newly renovated Main Street buildings that have been designed specifically for visual artists and writers. All of our studio spaces are outfitted to be as flexible as possible so that we can accommodate a variety of creative practices.
Residents live in newly renovated historic homes throughout town, within walking distance to studios and everything that downtown Monson has to offer. These are mostly 3 bedroom structures that are fully furnished and comfortable all four seasons of the year.
MEDIALAB MATADERO - RESEARCH RESIDENCY
MADRID, SPAIN

Medialab Matadero presents the fifth edition of its annual Situated Research Residency program.
Through this open call, Medialab will select 3 research and creation projects capable of exploring the relationships between contemporary art, design, science, technology, and society, with a critical, experimental approach open to collaboration.
We are looking for proposals that sit at the margins or intersections of disciplines, methodologies, and ‘knowledges’. Inspired by the principle of learning by doing, the residency aims to foster new ways of researching, prototyping, documenting, sharing knowledge, or mobilizing communities around relevant issues.
This is a residency that blends research and creation, but a finished project is not required as an outcome. It's important to remember that one of the residency's goals is the production of public knowledge — within Medialab's professional ecosystem, within Matadero's, and even within the city of Madrid.
For this reason, we place strong emphasis on programming activities open to the public (for which Medialab will provide logistical and financial support) and on the final production of materials falling into one of these basic format categories: a manual or set of instructions; documentary formats (report, feature, essay, audio or audiovisual documentary); or artistic documentation as a record of collective learning.
RECYCLED ARTIST IN RESIDENCY
PHILADELPHIA, PA

RAIR has 2 residency programs: THE STANDARD RESIDENCY and THE BIGGIE SHORTIE. Both are given access to Revolution Recovery’s waste stream as well as access to RAIR’s staff- who work closely with all residents.
THE STANDARD RESIDENCY:
A longer, more traditional studio-based program. Standard residents are given access to waste materials and a studio and project space during the week and weekends. This residency is good for people who want to dedicate 4-6 full weeks to their project and studio practice at RAIR.
THE BIGGIE SHORTIE:
A shorter length, project-based residency that takes place mainly on weekends, typically outside of the recycling facility’s operating hours. The flexible nature of Biggie Shorties allows for proposed projects to be customized to fit each residency. This residency is good for artists with commitments during the week and can only be present at RAIR during the weekends.
VERMONT STUDIO CENTER
JOHNSON, VT

A Vermont Studio Center residency provides artists and writers from around the world with the time and space to deepen their creative practice while building a solid network of mentors, collaborators, and friends.
Our residency includes a private room in a shared house, a private studio, meals, and access to the Visiting Artist and Visiting Writer Program. During every session there will be opportunities for residents to share their work through Resident Presentations and Open Studios.
