Anderson Ranch Art Center - Residency Program, Snowmass Colorado.

About the Program:

Since 1985, the Artists-in-Residence program at Anderson Ranch has nurtured the careers and communities of emerging and established visual artists through a blend of mentorship, artistic discovery, and community. By removing the distractions of everyday life and replacing them with personal studio space, state-of-the-art facilities, studio support, housing, and meals all within a beautiful mountain setting, the Artists-in-Residence Program gives artists the freedom to create in an uninterrupted, supportive, and inclusive environment.

During three residency terms, one 10-week session and two 5-week sessions, 45 artists from diverse backgrounds, age groups, and disciplines converge to work in ceramics, photography and new media, furniture design and woodworking, sculpture, painting and drawing, and printmaking.

Partnerships

Visiting Critics—respected artists, curators, and academics—join each residency to provide studio visits and public lectures, becoming an integral part of the community.

The Aspen Art Museum partners with the Ranch to offer exhibition tours and studio critiques from museum curators, bringing valuable perspectives beyond academia. Anderson Ranch also partners with RISD to fund up to four scholarships for selected graduating seniors.

Program Impact

Residents present their work through public slide nights and Open House exhibitions, engaging over 200 community members per event while developing communication skills. Many also participate in youth outreach programs, connecting with local students. Following their residencies, alumni often return as instructors, lecturers, or jurors—extending the program’s impact and fostering an ongoing, supportive artistic community.

Words from Program Participants

“I've done many other residencies, and Anderson Ranch is by far the best. It is a dynamic organization and is so supportive of the arts and artists. The diversity of makers creates a very stimulating atmosphere where one interacts with so many interesting artists. I felt fully supported here in every way. It really was the most amazing ten weeks, and it was a pure privilege to be part of this community. It exceeded my expectations.”

(Larry Buller, Artist-in-Residence)

“The time I’ve spent here has been a truly life-changing experience. I have grown both as an artist and a person in more ways than I could ever count. Coming from a low-income background, I am constantly faced with the challenge of how to access and sustain a fine art career. My fellowship to the residency program made a tremendous difference in helping me find my footing in my practice only a few months after graduating from RISD. From traveling to the American West for the first time, to living and working with such an inspiring cohort of artists, words can’t describe how grateful I am for this experience.”

(Chantal Feitosa, Artist-in-Residence)
